I applied through college or university. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in Feb 2012
Interview
I applied using the university system and the interview was scheduled through that.
There seemed to be some problems with email communication since I would occasionally fail to receive emails that were sent to applicants.
There were a lot of interviews on campus (I think they interviewed at least 50 people within 2 days) so everything was well-automated. The format was 2 back-to-back 45 minute 1-1 interviews with developers from different teams.
In general, I would recommend brushing up on basic algorithms and also reading up on Amazon services, especially all the web and cloud systems.

Question 1
Serialize (flatten) and de-serialize a binary tree. First describe the approach, then write the code.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Amazon in May 2012
Interview
I had on site interview marathon consisting of several in person one-to-one interviews with managers and team members and one with HR person. The interview set was set up by the company recruiter over email communication. Every interview had a smal QA session and then I was given one problem to solve and present it in corresponding way.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon in Aug 2011
Interview
The first round is phone interviews, then comes 1:1 interviews with both technical and management. The technical focused on data structures/algorithms/design questions, while the manager focused on behavioral questions. Everyone was nice and friendly and respectable, but the questions were challenging so be prepared! However after the interviews, it took quite a long time for them to respond as to whether or not to proceed with an offer, so you have to be patient.
