Pros

There used to be many, now there are few. The only positive these days is Roest and some of my colleagues, those that are still around,

Cons

Complete lack of direction Upper level management overhaul with unqualified people Human Resources ? does not exist Sales Sales Sales / Marketing Marketing Marketing - but little care about the client once they have bought this stuff and the people here who have to deliver the projects. R&D poor from top down, turnover rate is extremely high in the whole company. Highest management only care about what is in their pocket Career path exists if CEO likes you

Thank you for your review; it really sounds like we have disappointed you somehow. We are sorry if we let you feel that way. Backbase is a scale up organisation and as such we are going through many changes. All these changes are aimed at readying us for the future and addressing our current challenges at the same time. Due to this hyper growth mode we are not always yet at the level we would like it to be, but this is most probably recognisable for all organisations that are scaling. Nevertheless we think it is highly important that everyone feels valued within Backbase. Therefore I’d like to invite you to contact me personally and maybe we can discuss your experiences so we can learn from it all together. Simon, VP & Global Head of HR

Pros

- Some nice colleagues, although in other companies you can meet nice people as well. - Free lunches.

Cons

- Incredibly high turnover in the company. Some people just disappear and you have no idea what happened to them. Lots of nice and smart guys left company in recent months. - Criticism between teams and inside teams as well, that makes working atmosphere very unpleasant and toxic to work. - No technical growth at all - applying new techniques and frameworks almost impossible. Very bureaucracy environment. - Lots of technical debts after every release. A lot of them are still not resolved and no one really cares about them. - A lot of miscommunication between departments inside company HR <-> Finance. - People are treated as “corks” to fill the gap in sinking boat. - Salary below average in Amsterdam (tbh other company also offer not much higher salaries). - High workload for some people. If someone quits the volume of work is still the same and you have to work for that guy as well. Caution for people who wants to apply for this company: Local (Dutch) people won’t work for this salary. Freelancers/contractors are too expensive. So you guys are the last chance, last hope for them. After entering the company you’ll nicely fill the gap in the boat as a "cork" - managers are happy. Every month they import dozens of new "corks" from all over the world trying to keep the boat floating. What about you? Who really cares about the ”cork”. If the “cork” is old or it can’t fill the gap properly it will be replaced by another fresh one. If you respect yourself think twice before applying here. Be mindful - don’t waste your life here.

Pros

The team was nice , the office is super basic and they don't really care about the wellbeing of their employees, the only thing is a free lunch. The salary was ok

Cons

I really think it's not ok to lie to customers... they organise a massive event each year to basically sell things they haven't done or things barely possible. They spend a massive amount of money to simply create fluff. Everything is fake, they just think at the last minute of something that looks cool, ask their design team to spend ages on a nice presentation and then just demo this fake thing without even thinking about it's feasibility. It's pretty shocking actually.. It's ok to sell, but it's wrong to completely lie. I think they are good sales people before anything else. The management doesn't really care about the product itself, just the money. On top of that, they actually don't do UX Design at all, so don't bother working for them if they want to hire you as a UX Designer, they will just give you UI work to do, or powerpoint presentations (or google slides). A few people are lucky and get in the right team, but most of the time it's not great. I think some people are super motived, tech wise, design wise, but there is no process, and the management is egocentric. They have 10 VP of blabla and they are just bragging about air.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are always interested in hearing feedback from past employees and sorry that you have left Backbase with this impression. We are curious about when you left and which design team you worked for? You do not fit the profile of any UX Designer that has left in the last 12 months (‘here for more than 1 year’)? Over the past year, Backbase has been heavily investing in UX/UI Design and it’s a valued function across the company. Our 35+ UX Designers and Researchers are highly respected, working on end-to-end Product Design and Customer Projects - they do not work on slide decks unless they have a presentation. In response to your comments about our annual event. Our company conference always includes upcoming Roadmap items and this is standard practice in the Technology industry. This in no way deceptive and allows our customers to plan features up to 12 months in advance. All committed roadmap items are delivered by a team of over 400 designers and developers and our product is currently deployed in Banks around the world. Thank you again for the feedback and best of luck in your future endeavours.
