Pros

Great Work life balance. Technology is near cutting edge. Very stable bank to work for. Some of the senior execs have a very good style of motivating and getting the most out of their people.

Cons

The saying in the Expat community is "If your not dutch your not much" It is sad but true. I have seen my dutch colleagues rise to the heavens as I sit in the gutter with more experience and harder work ethic (Not drinking coffee all day). This is the reason I left the bank. Had more experience than most of my department combined yet always passed over for my dutch colleagues. Very sad. Also if they could get there act straight without the individual businesses working for the betterment of the bank and not trying to empire build you may have a concise path and message from the executive management.

Mixed - not good for international colleagues

Pros

Flexi and option for 4x9 working On-site facilities were nice EBB for purchasing additional holiday Relocation package for people moving to the Netherlands I worked with some nice people. Some teams have good, experienced, and knowledgeable colleagues.

Cons

As other reviewers have said, if you're not Dutch , or integrated, you will not get far. Few options to move into another role as the majority of roles will demand Dutch skills, even though supposedly an international bank. How pleasant your experience will be in the company depends on your manager and departmental management team. From my PoV Outdated management styles, such as stack ranking on reviews, or saying "I don't want people to bring me problems". Experience, especially from outside is not valued, unless it is to agree or say yes, at least in certain teams. Conflict/differences of opinion will be blamed on you not understanding the "Dutch" way - external Dutch colleagues assured me it was not an issue with understanding Dutch culture, but the "Rabo" way, especially for that department. Not offending long term colleagues was more important than raising issues and risks. Silos, resulting in duplication of effort and technologies. Empire building Options for time approved for external courses will depend on your manager, combined with a limited set of approved courses, your options for professional development can be extremely limited in certain fields or areas of expertise I was there over 2 years and didn't use my development budget at all. I was refused time for a course I was on before I started - colleagues in other departments received approval for using the time as per the CAO. Poor managers flourish. Once remote working started during the pandemic, no longer having the benefits of the on-site facilities meant that there was even less reason to stay. Managers turned up at people's homes unannounced during the pandemic, and some booked unwanted in-person meetings at people's homes, ignoring the personal risk-factors that had been communicated, this was only stopped due to national lockdown. It became clear to me that experienced colleagues had left/been forced out by people determined to get ahead, hence all the vacancies within the department. At meetups when I said were I worked I was met with comments and looks that indicated that certain teams had a negative reputation outside of the bank. Most leavers from the department did not move onto other banks or within the FS industry. I saw several international colleagues leave far quicker than I did, and they didn't stay much longer than was required by the relocation contract. No exit interview. For experienced professionals if you land in a problem department you risk stalling your career.

Suffocating, dishonest company culture

Pros

Some colleagues are very nice and truly trying to make positive societal impact

Cons

The higher you get, the more you are surrounded by old-system, dishonest company politics where integrity and promises always come second. Change is very difficult in this risk-averse, hierarchical context. In many managing teams, women and minorities still are a rare find and, if present, should be 'nice' and not too vocal.
