Problem with diversity and inclusion

Pros

- Top notch research and facilities - Theoretical freedom (in practice not so much due to the need of filling direct hours) - Motivated colleagues - Flexible environment

Cons

- Lack of collective strategy-leadership. Bottom-up approach that in practice translates as a collection of individual agendas and politics. The one with the loudest voice gets the agenda through. - Because everyone here (including those in position of power) represent their own interest and not TNO´s, there is large mismatch between what TNO preaches and what actually happens on the ground floor. - One of the consequences is the lack of diversity and inclusion. TNO claims to be an international environment, in practise, I have seen people declining to hold a meeting in English (suffering no consequences for this). - Low salaries and poor career prospects, especially for expats who do not speak Dutch

Pros

-Nice colleagues, some of them the experts in their domain (in NL) -Interesting variation of projects -Atmosphere, environment -Work/life balance -Good opportunities and choices for growth as e.g. consultant, project leader or business developer. A lot of investment in personal growth.

Cons

-Floating between research and consulting has become very challenging for the current market -Not the best payer, what the employee gets (gross) in the end is 5-6 times less of what he is charged to customers (possibly the worst ratio in the field of consulting). The rest is a very high overhead, which leads to very few customers and therefore available work in some departments. -A really distorted way of handling work, very unique usually in a negative way. Employees have to find their way around and get projects, even if there are people specifically paid for this work. Tough start specially for juniors. - Some parts of the job that are not directly billable as hours to the customer are considered of less importance in the total performance. -At the end of the day, selling yourself and getting into projects is more important than the actual delivered work, specially the closer you get to the HQ (ICT departments). The work is eventually done by people with good network, even if there are people better at this task siting in the next room. TNO is loosing gradually a lot of content oriented people , since there is a pressure for people with good soft skills. -A lot of departments in the loss doesn't seem a very promising future

Pros

challenging projects, possibility to choose topics and projects to work on

Cons

very dutch environment, nearly no tolerance for non-dutch speakers. The company claims to be international, however nearly 99% of meetings are in dutch, regardless the presence of foreign colleagues who cannot understand properly dutch language. very low growth possibilities
