Mastercard Sr. Software Engineer interview questions

In the interview, I was asked to write a function to count the number of letters in a String. After completing the task, the interviewer requested that I redo it using the Stream API. But why would one choose this approach? In this case Streams would have unnecessary complexity, reduced readability and, for sure, no perfomance advantage.
